Recent Surge in Violence and Deaths in ABQ

Since Saturday, August 17, 2024, there have been nine homicides in the Albuquerque Metro Area. As we’ve explained to our readers before, the Office of the Medical Investigator classifies a death as a homicide when someone dies violently due to another person’s intentional actions, regardless of whether the responsible individual is prosecuted. The OMI classifications/manners of death include: natural, homicide, suicide, accidental, undetermined, and pending. Cases labeled “pending” for cause/manner of death will eventually be reclassified once laboratory results, diagnostic tests, family interviews, and evidence are thoroughly analyzed and the official manner of death is determined.

Yesterday, Saturday, August 24th, a man was killed in Southeast Albuquerque. The incident began when a man reportedly wanted to purchase an off-road vehicle and met a woman in the area to make a deal. The man went for a test drive on the off-road vehicle but never returned. The woman, believing her vehicle had been stolen, went searching for it in the area. When she found her vehicle, she and the man got into an altercation, and the potential buyer was shot by the potential seller. Investigators later learned that the ATV had apparently broken down in the middle of the road on Florida Street SE, which is why the man never returned. Police are investigating further, and we will provide updates when charges are filed.

On August 20, 2024, a security guard shot a man at the Circle K at 141 98th St. SW. APD announced later that “after consulting with the District Attorney’s Office, this case is being reviewed as a possible self-defense shooting.”

APD was called out to the 500 block of Hermosa Dr. NE, on August 22nd, regarding a man who had been shot in the head. Reportedly the man was taken to the hospital in grave condition. An updated status on his condition has not been released since the shooting.

Last Sunday, August 18th, APD officers responded to a car crash in the Barelas neighborhood, when they were flagged down about a shooting near Gold Avenue and 5th Street SW. At the scene, authorities found one person, 13-year-old Michael Tubb, fatally shot and another with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries. The injured victim was transported to a local hospital.

The Albuquerque Police Department investigated three shooting deaths that occurred in the 900 block of Alvarado Dr SE on Sunday, August 18th. Officers responded to a suspicious activity call just before 1:00 PM where they located multiple victims with gunshot wounds. This was ultimately determined to be a murder suicide, two people were killed before one person took their own life.

On Saturday, August 17th, at around 2:30 PM, an armed burglary suspect fled from the Family Dollar on Broadway. The person reportedly brandished his gun, pointed it at an officer from the Albuquerque Police Department, and told the authorities he was not going back to jail. Ultimately, the suspect fled and hid in a shed on the 400 block of Arno. The suspect fired at least one round while he was in the shed, and an APD officer fired one round at some point striking the suspect. The APD SWAT team was eventually called out and they attempted to get the person to surrender. Their attempts were not successful, as at some point, the suspect was shot at after refusing to drop the gun and making some kind of motion, possibly with the firearm. The man was fatally shot and died on scene from his wounds.

There were also two people stabbed in Civic Plaza and one individual stabbed three times on Central and Rhode Island on Sunday, August 18th. On Saturday, August 17th, one person was reportedly stabbed near Wyoming, they were taken to UNMH and the reporting of this crime was not initially reported to APD until Sunday the 18th.

  1. Gee, I thought all the downtown violence would end when the Mayor shut down the Knockouts strip club. Could we have an even bigger problem in the dumpster fire called “Burque”?

  2. We need a more visible police presence downtown. People talk about east central but downtown is no better if not worse. Make the police walk downtown!

    1. Can’t have a more visible police presence if you don’t have the police to do it. Blame the people you voted for that don’t allow APD to do their job. Blame the Justice Department as well while you’re at it.

        1. Dehumanizing people because of differing political opinions is some bottom of the barrel behavior. You’re just as bad, if not worse than the people you hate. You’re all hateful partisan nit wits that should honestly just cancel each other out already so the rest of us can move on and actually contribute to the GG.

  3. Start enforcing current laws and quit putting up with this crap. The citizens of Albuquerque need to get out a vote. Last in all states in everything that matters

    1. Not even triple digits yet.

People see a cluster of homicides and poop their pants over it. I believe we’re at either 76 or 77. Which is probably right on track for our yearly average over the past two decades. Hopefully less than last year, but even if it is, it’s only gonna be by a handful. Beleive it or not, it’s not violent crimes like homicides that’s skyrocketing, it’s drugs and homelessness. So people see the headlines, watch too much local news, then they see the increase in homelessness as they drive around town, and they begin to form this false perception in their mind that we are one step away from Mad Max . It’s mostly partisans, of the conservative type, that are harping about crime like we’ve become Gotham in the dark knight, leaving the same “blame the dems, blame who you voted for” comments over and over again. But those of us who aren’t rubes will recall that violent crime has been about the same throughout both republican and democratic state and local governments. And a reasonable person would see that the entire nation is battling this spike in addiction from fentanyl, which in turn is leading to higher homelessness rates, and in some cases increases in both property and violent crime. Republican led states and cities are not somehow exempt from it, nor are they any better at fighting it. Which should tell a reasonable person that this is much more complex than partisan politics, and that both political parties are inept and don’t actually care about those they represent.

      1. You sound legitimately retarded. “Oh I’m nonpartisan but let me throw out the typical lefty ad hominins”.

People like you are the reason why things are so bad not just in this city but in this country.

    2. I guess we’re at 78 now. There was a double homicide last night, basically 100 yards from my house, in south Los Altos. I heard the cops arrive before I left for the gym, when I got back they were still there, so I figured it was another one and sure enough, it showed up on the crime map just a little while ago. So that’s 11/12, since last Sunday, or Monday? It certainly feels like it’s getting worse when clusters like this happen, but we still need to focus more on the overall trend for the year, and not get all worked up over variance.

      1. Tf is an “exterminationist”? lol

It’s just exterminator, ya dingus. You partisans, especially on the right, are so frickin dumb, it’s disappointing. But totally expected. Texas can’t even manage their own electrical grid Uvalde is in Texas, amd so are the fat piggies that let down the entire nation. Joe Rogan and his “death squad” of terrible so called comedians are in Texas. Huge Ls, is all I’m seeing from Texas.

  4. I’m not sure what they mean about downtown “turning” into a blood bath. I lived and worked downtown in 1985 as a graveyard shift clerk in a XXX shop, and even then people were saying …….oh, we never go downtown, it’s too dangerous”.

  5. Like Brave New World. [sic] “…the people have come to love their slavery.” Something about the state that keeps voting democrap, thinking better results will occur, because they want free or to keep mijo out of jail. The state needs a tent city prison. Bet a years salary it would work. People- RAISE their standards, don’t lower and enabling them. Start with teaching children manners, AND GET RID OF THOSE WORTHLESS SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS!! You can’t make up how the school system enables the illiteracy in the state.
